FAQ

Blue Ridge Fiddle Camp 2024

  • We are on the lookout for fiddlers and violinists at the intermediate to professional level, those with an open-minded approach to music and an enthusiasm for discovery—just like the instructors! If you're ready to be both challenged and have a ton of fun, you're in the right place. Plus, with no application fee, there's no reason not to give it a shot, regardless of whether you consider yourself at the "right" level or not.

  • Yes, but you will need to have a parent/guardian accompany you. The cost for an observer to attend camp is $600 for room and board.

  • Absolutely. We’re thinking you might play the viola or cello and it’s easy to see those fitting in at camp. If you play something else (we also like to shake things up!) you’re welcome to apply and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In either scenario, please understand there may not be a dedicated teacher for your instrument and you’ll be surrounded by fiddles & violins.

  • Both of your hands! (Believe us, it happens.)

While only one video is required, and you’re welcome to submit up to three for a more complete picture of your musical personality. The video doesn’t need to be fancy, but your playing should be clearly featured and audible. Please know that we watch each and every video with great care and kindness!

Required Video: We want to see something that showcases your strengths and what makes you, you. This could be solo, or with other musicians, and we ask that it is live (not a studio recording).

Optional Video Ideas: If your first video was with other folks, how about something solo, or if you were solo, how about with a group? Other ideas include a live show performance • music video with studio audio • something you find challenging and want to improve • your own composition • a special musical talent • skills on another instrument • something totally different from your other videos.

  • While we do watch and look at applications as they come in, decisions are NOT processed on a rolling basis. Rather, application decisions are made once all applications have been received and reviewed.

  • Sorry, we are not able to give an exact date to when you will be notified. However, all application decisions are sent at the same time, whether you applied first or last.

  • No way! If you didn’t get in this year, just keep playing and practicing, and please try again next year.

  • Yes, we have a very limited number of need-based scholarships. The scholarship application is available as an option within the overall camp application.

  • Yes, we want you to have the chance to share what you do. There will be an open mic and a public concert. Please understand, we won’t have room in the concert to feature everyone, but we’ll do our best to program a concert that showcases a wide range of talents.

  • Absolutely. We set aside time in the evenings to gather and play together.

  • Of course. Please note that if electric is your primary instrument, you’ll need to bring a small practice amp.

  • Reading music is not required, although it can be a useful tool for learning and teaching. Each instructor will have their own style and some may choose to provide sheet music. If you are accepted and this feels like a challenging area for you, we encourage you to brush up before arrival to get as much as you can from the experience.

  • In life? of course! At this camp? for the most part and with the right frame of mind. We love specialization and believe that a unique take on whatever music you play can come from incorporating unexpected or different elements. To this end, campers will see each faculty once, and then can choose-their-own-adventure, selecting their instructors on the final day.

  • YES! While the days will be dedicated to fiddle/violin, the evenings will be for jamming. And although we love everything with a bow, it’s nice to have little variety in a jam…

  • We’re happy you’re excited to know what’s in store, but you’ll need to wait until you arrive. We do not release the camp schedule in its entirety until participants get to campus. In general, you can look forward to 4-5hrs of daily group instruction, some all-camp activities, and time to hang/jam/practice/experiment.

  • Check-in will be Thursday morning and classes begin following lunch. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate early arrivals to campus. If you are arriving late please let us know so that we can make arrangements for you.

However, we do recommend arriving to the area early to enjoy all western North Carolina has to offer. There are TONS of beautiful AirBnb & hotel options nearby, hiking, great food, beer, and music.

  • Check-out will be Monday morning.

  • No, every student & observer will have a ticket to the Sunday concert included with camp tuition. If you want to buy additional tickets for visiting family or friends they can be found on the Brevard Music Center website: brevardmusic.org.
